Waldemar Kleinschmidt

Waldemar Kleinschmidt (born July 25, 1941 in Karolew near Łódź , Poland ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 1989 to 2002 he was Lord Mayor of Cottbus and the first Cottbus mayor to be democratically elected after the end of the GDR .

Life

Waldemar Kleinschmidt was born in the small village of Karolew , now part of Poland, near Łódź. After leaving school, he trained as a locksmith and studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Dresden . In 1965 he was employed as a technical manager in " VEB Maschinen- und Transportanlagenbau ".

In 1967 Waldemar Kleinschmidt joined the CDU. At that time he was studying at the University of Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg . From 1979 Kleinschmidt worked in the finance department of the Cottbus city ​​council . A year later he became councilor for finance. In December 1989, Waldemar Kleinschmidt was appointed as the successor to Erhard Müller , who had previously resigned, as Lord Mayor of Cottbus. In March 1991 he was confirmed as mayor in the local elections.

During his tenure, the Cottbus city administration moved back to the old town hall on Neumarkt . In addition, the 1995 Federal Garden Show falls under Kleinschmidt's term of office. In 2000, Kleinschmidt submitted a motion to deselection of the then alderman Karin Rätzel due to a broken relationship of trust. In the local elections in 2002, Kleinschmidt did not run, Karin Rätzel was elected as his successor with 66% of the vote. Kleinschmidt has been an honorary citizen of Cottbus since November 26, 2011 .
