Since there are no direct space activities in Australia, this mainly affects companies in the defense and telecommunications sectors .

The head of the ASA is the geologist and former head of the research agency CSIRO Megan Clark .

founding

Australia's neighbor New Zealand founded its own space agency - the New Zealand Space Agency - in April 2016 to create a legal framework for rocket launches by the New Zealand start-up company Rocket Lab . In July 2017, the Australian government also announced that it was considering the establishment of a national space agency. Your primary task would be to prevent the loss of jobs and sales to international competition. Two and a half months later, the government announced the establishment of the Australian Space Agency, and in May 2018 the official decision was made to establish the agency. She took on July 1, 2018 to operate on and was for the first four years with a budget of 26 million Australian dollars equipped. In addition, $ 15 million was made available for participation in international projects. Megan Clark was appointed director. The space agency is initially based at the Ministry of Industry and Science in Canberra .

tasks and goals

The Australian Space Agency is supposed to coordinate the space-related activities in Australia and support the local space industry in order to improve their competitiveness. Its aim is to represent the interests of Australian industry internationally, to network it internationally and to ensure its access to global supply chains . Furthermore, the agency is to administer the legislation for civil Australian space activities.

The Australian government hopes that the new agency will help Australia participate in the global space boom that began in the 2010s and create 20,000 new jobs.

“We designed the Agency's purpose to completely transform and expand the Australian space industry. We are very commercial. We are the most industry-focused space agency in the world. "

- Megan Clark (October 2018)

As one of its first activities, the ASA was involved in an amendment to the Space Activities Act , the legal basis for space activities in Australia. The change in law came into force on August 31, 2019 and, among other things, simplifies the approval procedures for rockets and launch sites. Shortly thereafter, the ASA agreed with NASA to participate in their Artemis moon flight program , for which Australia would initially like to provide 150 million Australian dollars (corresponding to approx. 90 million euros).
