Tyehimba Jess (* 1965 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American poet and university professor who received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2017 for his volume of poetry, Olio .

Life

Jess completed an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A post-graduate studies at New York University , he completed (NYU) with a Master of Fine Arts from (MFA). He began his writing career with financial support as a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center.

For his first collection of poetry, leadbelly , Jess received the National Poetry Series Award in 2004 and the 2006 Whiting Award for Poetry. Other well-known poems are “Hagar in the Wilderness” (2013), “Mercy” (2014) and “Blind Boone's Apparitions” (2016). In 2016 he published his second volume of poetry, Wave , which received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2017 . and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award . He is also literary editor of the literary magazine African American Review and lecturer ( associate professor ) for English language at the College of Staten Iceland .
