history

Association of Austrian biology teachers

The idea of founding an independent biologist association was put into practice in 1994 by biology teachers. Examples of this were the corresponding associations of chemistry and geography teachers in Austria. The initial goals were to improve the situation in biology at the AHS. The biology lessons were not continuous (“7th grade hole”) and compared to the other natural science subjects, biology was worse off in terms of the opening numbers for exercises. A newsletter "VÖBL" was created for more intensive networking and was first published in 1995.

The level of awareness of the association grew rapidly, so that as early as 1997, sections were created for the other types of schools. The magazine was upgraded and was given the name "bioskop" and an ISSN . The bioskop appeared in print until 2011. In 1999 it was decided to join the European Countries Biologists Association (ECBA). ECBA guests from Germany and France attended the meeting. Since only one association is allowed to represent its country in the EU, this accession greatly strengthened the VÖBL's position.

ABA

In 2001 a new board was elected, which not only consisted of biology teachers. In 2002 it was decided to change the name. The “VÖBL” became the “ABA” (Austrian Biologist Association). At the same time, a new mission statement was presented. In addition to the magazine, conferences and excursions have now been organized. The Austrian Biologist Association was networked with other environmental associations in the environmental umbrella organization . This was also followed by cooperation with “dialog gentechnik”, the Christian Doppler Institute in Salzburg and the celebration of the Darwin year together with the VdBiol, the Association of German Biologists (now VBIO ).

In 2010 a young, university team took over the management of the association. Networking via the Internet and to other associations was expanded and contacts to the universities were established via the alumni. In the course of these changes, the newsletter and the conversion of the bioscope from a print to an online medium were created. New advisory boards were won and a regular get-together was introduced, and regional groups were founded in western Austria and Styria. In 2016 the ABA expanded its regional offer and created additional regional groups in Vienna and Salzburg.
