Austrocactus philippii is a species of plant in the genus Austrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet philippii honors Rudolph Amandus Philippi .

description

Austrocactus philippii often grows branching with columnar, slender, prostrate or upright shoots that reach a length of 10 to 40 centimeters with a diameter of 3 centimeters. There are 7 to 10 ribs , which are strongly divided into cusps . The 1 to 5 strong, straight, piercing central spines are yellowish brown and 1 to 3 centimeters long. The 5 to 8 thin radial spines are needle-like, straight, whitish and 1.5 to 2 centimeters long.

The yellowish brown flowers are 4 to 5 centimeters long. The green fruits are white and slimy inside.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocactus philippii is widespread in central Argentina and central and southern Chile .

The first description as Cereus philippii by Eduard August von Regel was published in 1882. Franz Buxbaum and Friedrich Ritter put the species in the genus Austrocactus in 1963 . A nomenclature synonym is Erdisia philippii (Regel) Britton & Rose (1920).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
