The core mission of the Swiss Armed Forces is space security and defense. Therefore, the extract was not designed as an offensively deployable combat element for a war of aggression , but for national defense.

In the time of the confederation from 1815, the Swiss army consisted of a federal extract, a federal reserve and the Landwehr. From 1850 to 1994 the excerpt was an age group that comprised 20 to 33 year olds from 1874 to 1907 and 22 to 33 year olds from 1907 to 1949. Under the influence of the Second World War, the move was extended to the 20 to 36 year olds until 1961, but then limited to 21 to 32 year olds from 1961 to 1994.

With the military reform of 1874, exodus and Landwehr battalions were formed that were permanently assigned to the cantons (cantonal troops). The division into army classes was abolished on January 1, 1995.
