Intelligent Light System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Intelligent Light System is the name of the Mercedes-Benz brand for its adaptive headlight system, which automatically adapts to the weather, light and driving conditions. Corresponding systems are now also used by other manufacturers.

Range of functions

The Intelligent Light System is available in conjunction with bi-xenon headlights or LED headlights. It is based on the static and dynamic cornering light function and offers the following functions that have been expanded over the years:

1st stage

The first stage of the Intelligent Light System was introduced in June 2006 as an option in the facelifted E-Class . It was installed as standard in the CL Coupé from September 2006. The system was subsequently available as an option from March 2007 in the C-Class and from October 2008 in the GLK-Class .

It includes the following functions:

  • Two-stage motorway light : It increases the low beam range by around 50 meters by increasing the lamp output from 90 km / h and extending the range of both headlights from 110 km / h. "Autobahn light", "adaptive double- distance xenon headlights ", "AFS 2", "AFL Plus" or "Tri-Xenon". The range of the (xenon) headlights is varied depending on the driving speed, taking into account the steering angle and feedback from the rain sensor. Such headlights are offered for. B. in cars from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Saab and Skoda. They are produced u. a. from Hella. The highway light can be generated by raising the headlights or an additional screen placed between the lamp and the lens. At the same time, the burner voltage can be increased. The car manufacturer can use a diagnostic program to check the light distribution in motorway mode while stationary. Such manufacturer-specific diagnostic programs are not available as part of a general inspection. The motorway light described in this section must be distinguished from the automatic switching on of the low beam at high speeds ( automatic light ), which z. B. at VW is also called motorway light.
  • Country road light: Depending on the speed, it illuminates the right edge of the lane brighter and more spaciously; the field of vision is extended by 10 meters.
  • Extended fog light : It illuminates the inner half of the road better and reduces glare by swiveling the left main headlight unit by 8 ° outwards and downwards. It is activated when the rear fog light is switched on.

2nd stage

The second stage was offered as an option in March 2009 in the E-Class . From summer 2009 the system will also be offered in the revised S and CL class models.

Building on the above-mentioned range of functions, there is an extension:

  • Adaptive high beam assistant : technology that switches between low beam and high beam depending on the traffic situation when the system is active. A camera behind the windshield examines the surroundings for light sources, thus ensuring that the system does not cause any glare. In addition to activating and deactivating the high beam, the system adaptively adjusts the headlight range in the low beam: the range of the headlights is always selected so that no other road users are dazzled - but the road is illuminated as well as possible. Headlight ranges of up to 300 m (comparison: simple low beam 65 m) are achieved. The transitions from low beam to high beam and back are made with a smooth transition. This should help the driver's eyes get used to the new lighting.
  • Daytime running lights in LED technology.
