The Mercedes-Benz 204 series is a series of the mid-range C-Class model . It was produced from March 2007 to June 2015 and replaced the 203 series built since March 2000 .
Production of the sedan ended at the beginning of May 2014. Since the beginning of February 2014, the successor to the Mercedes-Benz series 205 has been produced. In March 2014, the production of the station wagon was stopped. The coupe was the last model in this series to be built until June 2015.
General
When it appeared, the first C-Class represented the entry into the Mercedes-Benz model range as the smallest series . From 1997 there was an even smaller model with the A-Class , but the C-Class remained the "smallest" Mercedes-Benz with rear wheel drive . With the third generation of the 204 series , the series became slightly larger overall. The c w value, on the other hand, fell to 0.25 to 0.33, depending on the model.
The W-204 sedan was presented to the press for the first time in the Mercedes-Benz World in Stuttgart on January 18, 2007, and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007 . The notchback sedan was followed by a station wagon ( T model ) in December 2007 .
There was no longer a shortened coupé on the same basis as its predecessor, the old CLC class was continued to be built until 2011. In June 2011 it was replaced by a new coupé, which was now about the same size as the sedan.
Technical innovations
The 204 series C-Class introduced a number of technical innovations, such as a new Linguatronic system that is supposed to understand entire sentences. The optional COMAND APS NTG 4 operating and display system was available for the first time in the C-Class with a large screen that extends electrically from the upper part of the center console when the operating system is switched on. For the first time in the middle class there was an optional Intelligent Light System .
There was also an optional PRE-SAFE system that can recognize an impending collision in advance and enables the seat belt tensioners to be activated before the impact or can bring the head restraints into an optimal position in order to mitigate the effects of the accident.
Sedan ( W 204 ) and T-Model ( S 204 )
The four-door notchback sedan grew in length by 55 millimeters to 4581 millimeters. The width of the body has increased by 42 to 1770 millimeters and the wheelbase by 45 to 2760 millimeters. The increased external dimensions should also provide more space in the interior. This not only increased the trunk volume by 20 to 475 liters (VDA), but also increased the front shoulder space, for example, by 40 millimeters.
The C-Class T-Model was on sale between December 2007 and March 2014. The interior corresponds to that of the sedan. The trunk volume is 485 to 1500 liters.
The Easy-Pack-Fixkit is available exclusively for the T-model , with which the luggage can be fixed with sliding rails among other things. The payload is up to 605 kilograms.
The station wagon is 1.5 centimeters longer than the sedan, which only benefits the trunk.
Facelift
After a facelift, the 204 series was available since March 26, 2011, extensively revised. The headlights have been revised and the front apron has been adapted to that of the E-Class , with a rounded lip under the grille. The wide LED bars from the 212 series were also adopted. At the rear, the apron was only slightly revised and the rear lights also received a new graphic. The cockpit has been completely redesigned with a center console , largely taken from the Mercedes-Benz CLS . The screen is now firmly seated on the center console. The instrument cluster with a color TFT display was also taken from the CLS .
On the technical side, in addition to the six-cylinder engines, the four-cylinder engines with the revised 7G-TRONIC PLUS , which in turn comes with a start-stop system, were also available in the future . The V6 petrol engine was replaced by the newly developed M 276 with 225 kW (306 hp); the V6 diesel was the OM 642 LS , which comes with 195 kW (265 hp). The C 300 was discontinued, while the C 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was now also introduced in Germany. The suffix CGI is not used for engines with direct injection. In addition, ten new driver assistance systems based on radar, camera and sensor technology such as the distance control system Distronic Plus , the Blind Spot Assist, the Lane Keeping Assist, the PRE-SAFE brake, parking guidance including Parktronic , Speed Limit Assist , active Blind Spot Assist and the Active Lane Keeping Assist, the drowsiness detection system Attention Assist and the Adaptive High Beam Assist , all of which are already familiar from the larger model series, are entering the C-Class .
Finally, a new generation of telematics made its debut in the C-Class for the first time , with easier operation, a larger display, telephone book transfer, SMS display, wireless music playback via Bluetooth and a USB interface in the center armrest. The COMAND Online multimedia system made it possible to surf the Internet for the first time in the C-Class . In addition, 3D optics with three-dimensional city models are used for navigation; routes driven can also be recorded. For the entry-level radio Audio 20 CD is the Becker MAP PILOT cheap navigation expansion. The operation takes place via the central rotary and push button, the displays are made via the central screen.
Coupé ( C 204 )
At the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 was a further variant of the 204 series introduced. This is a coupé that replaces the CLC class and came onto the German market on June 4, 2011.
It is based on the usual C-Class , is four centimeters flatter than this and is produced in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen . At the market launch there were three gasoline engines (the C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY , C 250 BlueEFFICIENCY and the C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY ) and two diesel models ( C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY ). The two more powerful petrol engines have the 7G-Tronic Plus as standard . It is available at an additional cost for the other models that have a six-speed manual transmission as standard.
All models are equipped with an automatic start-stop system. The interior largely corresponds to that of the sedan. The Coupé has the seats of the E-Class Coupé and the steering wheel of the CLS-Class . In contrast to the other coupés from Mercedes-Benz , this model has a B-pillar and fixed, non-opening rear side windows. The AMG version will follow at the same time in June. For the market launch of the coupé, Mercedes-Benz offered the Edition 1 special model . This includes the AMG sports package as well as a style package for the interior and two optional special paint finishes.
In the summer of 2011, Mercedes-Benz also presented the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series , which is equipped with an even sportier chassis and modified body parts and has an output of 380 kW (517 hp). It was published in January 2012. One day after the order was released on November 28, 2011, the entire contingent of 600 vehicles was sold out.
Model history
- Since July 2007, 4MATIC permanent all - wheel drive has been available for all six-cylinders - for the first time also for a diesel.

* The engine designation is encoded as follows. M = engine, OM = oil engine, series = 3-digit, E = intake manifold injection, KE = port injection, DE = direct injection, ML = compressor, L = charge air cooling, A = exhaust gas turbocharger, red. = reduced power / displacement
The C 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY has only been available in Germany since March 2011; B. available in the Netherlands and Austria.
In the USA, the C 280 was offered as the C 300 from the start .
The AMG Performance Plus package can be ordered as an optional extra for the C 63 AMG . In addition to the increase in performance, it includes an AMG performance steering wheel, a spoiler lip on the boot lid and an optimized braking system with red calipers. With the drivers package , it is also possible to increase the maximum speed limit to 280 km / h.
BlueEFFICIENCY models
The models C 180 Compressor BlueEFFICIENCY and C 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY were available from April 2008 . First presented as FuelEconomy , it is a package of measures to reduce fuel consumption.
With the introduction of the CGI direct injection engine (end of 2009) and the new diesel engines ( OM 651 ; end of 2008), Mercedes-Benz names all of these vehicles as BlueEFFICIENCY .
The details of the modifications:
- modified engines (with the C 180 compressor , the displacement was reduced to 1.6 liters with the same output)
- Lowering by 15 mm (AMG package)
- complete underbody paneling of the diesel models also for the C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY compressor
- Partial cover of the radiator grille, which reduces the flow of air into the engine compartment
- Sealing of the joints around the headlights
- tires with lower rolling resistance
- Weight reduction of 19 or 32 kilograms (including a thinner windscreen)
- Demand-based regulation of the power steering
- newly developed differential
- extended gear ratio for the C 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY
- Switching and consumption display in the cockpit
- lower air resistance exterior mirrors
The c w value is improved by the aerodynamic modifications to a new record of 0.25. The exterior mirrors of the BlueEFFICIENCY models, recognizable by their arrow-like indicators, will be standard for all C-Classes from the end of 2008 . The C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY compressor consumes 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers instead of 7.4 liters and the C 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers instead of 5.7 liters.
The new OM 651 diesel engine in the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was presented at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The 2.1-liter, supercharged inline four-cylinder has an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. This makes it the world's most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine in a passenger car. It should accelerate the C-Class e to 100 km / h and up to 250 km / h in 7.0 seconds and consume only 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers. Initially, it was only offered with a manual transmission in the Prime Edition special model . Since April 2009, the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY has also been available in conjunction with the other equipment lines and with an automatic transmission.
The C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY was also available from the end of 2008 to spring 2011 . Compared to the normal C 350 with manifold injection, it received several modifications:
- Conversion of the engine to second generation direct injection. The engine output increases by 15 kW to 215 kW, the torque increases by 15 Nm to 365 Nm
- Weight savings thanks to a thinner windscreen and new forged lightweight rims
- tires with lower rolling resistance
- Demand-based regulation of the power steering
- automatically controlled radiator cover that regulates the air flow into the engine compartment as required
With these measures, the C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY consumes around 10% less fuel and gets by with 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers.
New registrations in Germany
According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the mid- range car segment is dominated by the four car models Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and VW Passat. In recent years, these models have always accounted for more than 10% of the vehicle segment.
In 2010 the Mercedes C-Class was the most registered mid-range car in Germany, in the other years it was the VW Passat. However, the evaluation of the new registrations to private vehicle owners is remarkable: here the Mercedes C-Class has consistently achieved first place in the statistics with the most vehicles and by far the highest private share of total sales in comparison with the other dominant car models , see. Table below.
Between the market launch (March 2007) of the 204 series and April 2011, over 1.2 million vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide.

Motorsport
Mercedes used a racing car in the look of the W 204 in the DTM from 2007 to 2011 . The car with which Paul di Resta won the championship in 2010 had a 4-liter V8 engine with an output of around 500 hp. Former Formula 1 drivers Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard drove other DTM W- 204s .
Two-door coupés have been driven in the DTM since the 2012 season, so Mercedes is using a racing car that looks like the C 204 .
