Autolycus of Pitane

Autolycus of Pitane (* around 360 BC in Pitane , Aeolia , † around 290 BC ) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician .

He worked in the late 4th century BC. And is said to have been the teacher of the Greek philosopher Arkesilaos . Two of his works are still around today from around 330 BC. Writings written in BC received: "About the rotating sphere" and "About the rise and fall" , which deal with the geometry of the sphere under astronomical aspects. These are the oldest surviving works on mathematics and astronomy in Greek literature .

The lunar crater Autolycus is named after him.
