Autonomy Corporation is a software company that makes enterprise software . The Public Limited Company is headquartered in Cambridge and San Francisco . The company uses technology developed through research at Cambridge University.
history
Autonomy was founded in 1996 in Cambridge / England by Michael Lynch and Richard Gaunt as a spin-off from the Cambridge Neurodynamics company. The core idea of Autonomy was the use of Bayes' theorem for text searches. Autonomy applied the theorem to search in large amounts of text and was able to provide contextualized search results using methods of statistical inference. A method that is one of the standard data mining procedures today.
In 1998, Autonomy was first listed on what was then the EASDAQ exchange at a price of around 30 pence. At the height of the "internet bubble" the stock market price was £ 30. In August 2011, Hewlett-Packard agreed to acquire Autonomy, which closed in October, for $ 12 billion, a price that Larry Ellison described as "absurdly high". The company's numbers were embellished.
Acquisitions
In December 2005, Autonomy bought Verity, one of its main competitors, for around $ 500 million. In July 2007, Autonomy bought Zantaz, a company that provides e-mail archiving and litigation support, for $ 375 million. In January 2009, Autonomy bought Interwoven, a company that makes corporate content management software, for $ 775 million.
Sponsorship
The company has been sponsoring the English football club Tottenham Hotspur since the 2010/2011 season . According to media reports, the Spurs will receive £ 20 million from the software company.
