Autoplay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Autoplay is a function in a media player , operating system or website that ensures that a media file is played automatically. The function can be triggered by inserting / connecting a data carrier , by calling up a website or by reaching the end of the current media file. The term is mostly used for video or audio files . Pictures can be played automatically as part of a slide show . The selection can be made according to a predefined list or parameters , the random principle or an algorithm that tries to find suitable entries.

Examples of the autoplay function

  • YouTube has integrated an autoplay function that automatically plays newly suggested videos. The function can be deactivated.
  • Music services such as Spotify or iTunes have integrated an autoplay function that plays similar songs after a playlist or album has ended.
  • Some operating systems have an autoplay function for inserting storage devices such as a USB stick or MP3 player , which ensures that media files are played automatically after they are inserted. For the function in Windows, see Autorun .
  • In Internet advertising , there is often an automated display of advertising in individual software and media content, such as advertising clips . So the Facebook Messenger z. B. receive autoplay advertising in the future.
  • Media player software usually have an integrated autoplay function which ensures that individual sections of a DVD or content in a folder or directory are played automatically.
  • Story function in social networks and instant messaging services, in which a sequence of mostly short and time-limited multimedia status messages is played in the form of a clip.

Measures against autoplay

Since many users find autoplay annoying, there are different plugins for some web browsers that automatically block autoplay. In addition, the function can usually be switched on or off in the respective program and configured accordingly. The browser developers themselves, such as the developers of Google Chrome , also try to prevent annoying autoplay, which, for example, ensures that the sound suddenly becomes loud on many tabs and, on the other hand, use mute, for example, if no content has yet been accessed from the page . However, an automatic lock can also cause problems and content may no longer work properly. Another reason against autoplay can be to reduce unnecessary data volume consumption.
