Autosan is a Polish bus manufacturer with roots dating back to 1832. The company's headquarters are in Sanok in south-east Poland.

history

The company was originally founded in 1832 as a manufacturer of boilers by Walenty Lipiński and Mateusz Beksiński. Later, equipment for breweries and stills as well as railway wagons began. The first omnibuses were built in 1926. The body was mounted on Lancia chassis.

Production ceased during the Second World War and only resumed in 1950. With the new establishment, a sufficient supply of buses in Poland should be ensured; In the course of the Cold War , the country increasingly had to meet its needs for industrial goods itself. Together with the commercial vehicle manufacturer Jelcz , which produced buses as well as trucks up to 2012, the cars made by automobiles had an impact on regular bus services in the People's Republic of Poland . In addition, commercial vehicle manufacturer Zasław manufactured trailers on behalf of Autosan.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , Autosan struggled with its outdated product range , which, however, was continuously modernized and brought up to the state of the art after 1989 . After the renewed privatization, the company was now part of the Sobiesław Zasada group and also produced trailers .

After bankruptcy in December 2013, the investor Grzegorz Tarnawa acquired 93 percent of the company for a symbolic value of one zloty . From May 2014, however, the company was up for sale again. In April 2016, the company was indirectly sold to the Polish armaments group PGZ .

Today the company offers the entire range of buses, from city buses to coaches, and is one of the largest bus manufacturers in Poland after its competitor Solaris , which is particularly successful in Western Europe and ahead of its competitors AMZ-Kutno , Solbus and Automet . Around 50 buses were built in 2014.
