history
Frank J. Ujka built the film theater from 1938 to 1939. It replaced the Grand Theater, which until then had operated across the street. The building site for the Avalon Theater was a plot that had not been used since a house fire in 1922. The cinema premiered on April 28, 1939 and showed the film Broadway Serenade on the occasion . The movie theater operated without interruption until the early 1980s. After that, the building showed an increased need for renovation. Earl and Myrl Sickles, two former directors from Off-Broadway , acquired the Avalon Theater in 1987 and carried out extensive renovations. Among other things, a theater stage was installed and the ceiling and roof replaced. They then rented the building to a local cultural association, which uses it for theater performances, musicals, and song and dance events.
The Avalon Theater has been registered in the NRHP since February 4, 1991.
