The Avions Fairey Tipsy Nipper is a simple, robust, single-seat sport aircraft designed by Ernest Oscar Tips and produced by the Belgian manufacturer Avions Fairey SA in Charleroi-Gosselies .

development

The Tipsy Nipper is a further development of the Tipsy Junior designed in 1947 and represents the end point of a series of light aircraft started in 1935 and designed by the director of Avions Fairey Tips. The first prototype of the Tipsy Nipper with the approval OO-NP still had an open cockpit and used a converted Volkswagen engine with 30 hp. The first flight took place on December 2, 1957. The second prototype OO-NX already had a closed cockpit and an extended fuselage, but still used the same engine.

T. 66 Tipsy Nipper Mk. I
The first production aircraft (OO-NIA) flew on March 10, 1959 and was similar to the second prototype, but had an air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine Pollmann HEPU with an output of 40 hp. The test pilot of the Fairey company, Bernhard Neefs, demonstrated the aerobatic ability of the small aircraft at the ILA 1962 in Hanover.
T. 66 Tipsy Nipper Mk. II
The second production version was similar to the Mk. I, but a Stark-STAMO 1400 engine with 45 hp was installed. The first prototype flew on February 16, 1959, the first production model on October 20, 1959.

construction

The fuselage consists of a tubular steel construction made of welded chrome-molybdenum tubes with fabric covering. GRP is used for the bonnet and underside of the fuselage. The full view canopy consists of one piece. The aircraft is a cantilever middle-wing. The wing is made of wood. It has a continuous box spar, a plywood nose and is covered with fabric. The tail unit is designed as a self-supporting standard construction. The rudder is made of tubular steel, the elevator is made of wood. Both are covered with fabric.

The aircraft has a rigid nose wheel landing gear with mechanically operated disc brakes on the main wheels. The nose wheel is controllable. An emergency spur is attached to the end of the fuselage.
