Avischai Brawerman ( Hebrew אבישי ברוורמן; * 1948 ) is an Israeli economist and politician and former president of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Sheva (1990–2006). During his presidency the number of students increased from approx. 5,000 to 17,000 and the university gained a worldwide reputation - especially in the field of desert research.

Life

Brawerman studied Statistics and Economics at Tel Aviv University and received his PhD in Economics from Stanford University . After working at the World Bank in Washington , Brawerman returned to Israel and was President of Ben Gurion University for sixteen years.

In November 2005 , Brawerman got into politics and became a member of the Labor Party . In the 2006 election he was elected to the Knesset . In 2009 he was initially an opponent of the coalition under Netanyahu . However, he then became a minister. At first he had no portfolio and later became Minister for Minority Affairs . In 2011 he founded the Ha'Atzma'ut party with others .
