The Axel-Springer-Passage is located in the middle of the former newspaper district in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg on Rudi-Dutschke-Strasse (formerly Kochstrasse ), Markgrafenstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. It was designed by the London architects Renton, Howard, Wood, Levin Partnership (RHWL Architects). The foundation stone was laid on November 20, 2000, the opening on January 13, 2004. The passage is connected to the Axel Springer high-rise building via the Ullstein Hall and is located on the site of the formerly listed rotation hall of the Axel Springer Verlag , which was demolished in the late 1990s in favor of the passage.

The shape of the building takes up the traditional architecture of the Berlin courtyards: the functional and architectural heart of the glass building ensemble is the concept of eight inner courtyards that are offset against each other . Four of these atriums are roofed over with a glass dome above the first floor and are air-conditioned to enable year-round use. Five inner courtyards are also connected to one another, so that visitors have access to an area of ​​over 2200 m².

In addition to various shops, there is a bar (“Mittelbar”), a large lunch restaurant (“Paparazzi Restaurant”) and a bistro with a coffee shop (“Deli News”) in the passage. A medical center is located on the first floor, the other floors are office space.

Since December 2013 the Ullstein-Halle has served as the newsroom for the newspapers Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag .

The Chancellor of Unity memorial , a bust of Helmut Kohl created by Serge Mangin , was located in the Axel-Springer-Passage until August 29, 2010 . On the 20th anniversary of German reunification , the bust was added to an ensemble, the monument to the fathers of unity , which is now located on Rudi-Dutschke-Straße in front of the Axel Springer high-rise .
