Axel Weber (economist)

Axel Weber (* 1954 in Cologne ) is a German economist, expert on social policy and university lecturer.

Axel Weber studied economics, social policy and public finance at the University of Cologne and the Pennsylvania State University . He did his doctorate on a topic in the field of public goods . Then he was an assistant at the seminar for social policy at the University of Cologne.

He began his professional career in 1983 as a consultant at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs . Afterwards he was a consultant for social policy and head of the department in the planning staff of the AOK federal association. From 1991 to 1996 he was a national expert in the social economy department of the EU Commission . From 2002 to 2009 he worked as a specialist in social policy and social development at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila. He was the initiator of the ADB's “Social Protection Index”, a comparative study of social security in almost all Asian countries. Weber worked internationally as an appraiser and consultant for companies and organizations and took on teaching assignments at the University of Trier and the University of Trier.

In 2015 he was appointed honorary professor in the social insurance department of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences “because of his outstanding achievements in teaching and practice” .
