The lake Aydingkol ( Uighur ئايدىڭكۆل, Ayding Kɵli, Ayding köl, Chinese 艾丁湖 , Pinyin Àidīng Hú ) is located about 150 km southeast of Ürümqi , the capital of the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang , in the center of the approximately 50,000 km² Turpan Depression at 155 meters below sea level.
This lake is the fourth lowest lake after the Dead Sea , the Sea of Galilee and the Assal Lake . It is fed by the melted snow from the mountains, whereby the water evaporates in summer and the washed-out salt remains.
The dried up, approximately 152 km² large lake area is located about 50 km from the Gaochang oasis and extends about 40 km from east to west and 8 km from north to south. Here is Glauber's salt mined.
