The Aytoniaceae are a family of liverworts from the order of the Marchantiales with about 85 species.

features

The thallus is forked or forms ventral rungs. The multi-layered assimilation tissue contains air chambers, these are divided by cell walls containing chlorophyll; thread-like cell sprouts are missing. The respiratory orifices are more or less raised and consist of two (rarely only one) to six rings, each with 5 to 8 or rarely 10 cells. On the underside of the thallus there are crescent-shaped to triangular-egg-shaped, mostly purple abdominal scales.

The species are mostly monocial , more rarely dioecious . Antheridia are disc-shaped and sit on the top (dorsal side) of the thallus. The archegonia stands are raised on girders that rise from the top of the thallus or the top of the thallus. They are head-shaped and have the spherical spore capsules on their underside. As the spores ripen, the upper part of the capsule is thrown off or disintegrates irregularly. Spores are 35 to 120 micrometers in size.

The thalli are often adapted to drought. The family is particularly at home in areas with a Mediterranean climate . Some species of the genera Asterella and Mannia occur in alpine and arctic regions.

Systematics

The Aytoniaceae family includes 5 genera with around 85 species worldwide:

With the exception of Cryptomitrium , all genera with one to a few species are represented in Central Europe.
