Johann Berghammer

Johann Berghammer (born July 22, 1917 in Vienna ; † May 1, 1975 in Mattighofen ) was an Upper Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and postal worker. From 1967 to 1975 he was a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament and mayor of the Mattighofen community.

education and profession

Berghammer attended elementary school and then graduated from secondary school. He worked as a farm laborer and subsequently worked as a leather factory worker. Ultimately, he was professionally active as a postal worker. Berghammer served in the German Air Force between 1940 and 1945 .

Politics and functions

Berghammer joined the Socialist Party of Austria in 1945 and served as party chairman of the Mattighofen Socialist Party for 18 years. He was also district chairman of the SPÖ Braunau am Inn and was also union representative as district chairman of the postal union. His greatest commitment was local politics, where he was first elected to the Mattighofen municipal council in 1949. In 1961 he was promoted to deputy mayor of Mattighofen and finally took over the office of mayor of Mattighofen in 1963. As a result, he directed the affairs of the community Mattighofen until 1975 as mayor. In addition to his role as mayor, Berghammer also ran for the state elections in 1967 . He was subsequently sworn in as a member of the Upper Austrian state parliament on November 17, 1967 and remained in the state parliament for one and a half legislative periods. Berghammer died in the office of member of the state parliament and mayor. During his tenure as mayor, the construction of the secondary school, a youth holiday home, the kindergarten, a new mortuary and residential complexes took place in Mattighofen. In addition, the municipal office was modernized and money was invested in expanding the local sewer system. In addition to his political offices, Berghammer was also a member of the board of directors of Sparkasse Mattighofen and chairman of the administrative committee, local branch manager of the Red Cross and chairman of the ATSV.

Private

Berghammer was born the oldest of eleven children. He married Elisabeth Langgartner in 1939, although the marriage remained childless. Berghammer died on May 1st at the lectern during the May 1st celebration in Mattighofen. His funeral was attended by 2,000 people.
