Ayuwang Pagoda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ayuwang Pagoda or King Ashoka Pagoda ( Chinese  阿育王 塔 , Pinyin Āyùwáng tǎ ) is a pagoda in the Dai district of the Chinese province of Shanxi . It is named after King Ashoka , the third ruler of the Indian Maurya dynasty , who is called "Ayuwang" in Chinese. It is located on the site of the now no longer preserved Yuanguo Temple (Yuanguo Si 圆 果 寺), which is why it is also called the pagoda of the Yuanguo Temple (圆 果 寺塔). It was first built in 601 during the Sui Dynasty . In its current form it dates from 1275 of the Mongol dynasty . In 1681, during the Qing Dynasty , it was badly damaged by an earthquake and restored in 1694.

The Ayuwang Pagoda ( Ayuwang ta ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-234) since 2001 .
