Azal (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Azal is a Portuguese grape family . Its most important representatives are the red Azal Tinto , a white Azal Branco . Other grape varieties in this family are Azal Doce , Azal Preto , Azal Aberto and Azal Azedo . Azal Fechado is mentioned in Minho 1790, but not later. All variants are very acidic and part of the famous Vinho Verde .

  • Azal Aberto is mentioned by Duarte d'Oliveira as a meaningless grape variety of the Minho.
  • He describes Azal Azedo as an abandoned grape variety in the region around Porto .
  • Azal Doce has pink to purple grapes . The grapes are small and conical. The berries only have small stones.
  • Azal Preto is one of the best grape varieties from the Minho region. The grapes and their berries are small. The berries are almost spherical and also small with a thin skin. Their color is almost black with pink reflections. They have juicy flesh.

The azal grape varieties ripen late and the wine made from them is not very alcoholic.
