Azal Branco

The white wine variety Azal Branco is an autochthonous variety from Portugal . It is grown there on over 3,080 hectares ; It is recommended in the Douro Valley and approved for the Beira Interior Norte and Beira Interior Sul regions .

It provides an acid imprinted on Riesling reminiscent wine with very specific varietal bouquet . The wine is used in the area around Basto , Penafiel and Amarante in the white Vinho Verde .

In addition to the variety Azal Branco nor the varieties Azal Alberto, Azal Acedo, Azal Doce, Azal Preto and include Azal Tinto to the family of Azal .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The white, woolly shoot tips show slightly carmine-red approaches (anthocyanin spots). The young leaves are blistered on the leaf surface (also called blade) and woolly on the underside.
  • The fully grown, trilobed leaves are medium-sized and ring-shaped. The stem bay is U-shaped. The leaves are fluffy on the underside. Their edges are covered with small angular teeth.
  • The medium-sized, yellowish-green grapes have a cylindrical to conical shape. They are compact. The slightly elliptical berries are medium-sized. They are often deformed by the pressure of the neighboring berries.

Azal Branco is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
