The Bâtiment d'art contemporain (BAC) is now an object of industrial culture and a cultural space of the city of Geneva , which brings together collections and museums of contemporary art under one roof. One goal had been to create an object in the canton of Geneva comparable to the “Beaubourg” (Center Pompidou) in Paris .

Location and history

The BAC is located in the Plainpalais district of Geneva in a former factory building for machine tools . The building was part of the production facilities of the SIP (Société genevoise d'instruments de physique) in Geneva, which had been based there since 1862. In the 1960s, SIP was one of the most renowned manufacturers of precision machines in the world. Of the 1,500 employees, 1,200 were employed in Plainpalais.

1939 was there, along the rue des Bains , the Bâtiment C (Building C). In 1958 the Bâtiment rouge was the last production building to be replaced by the modern new building of Bâtiment D (Building D). These buildings are separated from one another by a fire wall , but from the outside they almost form a unit. Due to years of economic crisis, SIP sold the buildings in Plainpalais in stages from 1983. In 1987 the city of Geneva acquired Buildings C and D to create a space for art exhibitions in the center of the city. Architecturally, the building was only slightly changed, not for financial reasons, but because Christian Bernard, as the first director of MAMCO, wanted to preserve the shape of the previously industrially used rooms. External steel stairs were added to both buildings as a second escape route.

The most important user was the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO) which opened there in 1994 . The MAMCO has today four floors with 3,500 square meters of exhibition space in the building D . One of the former users was the Jean Tua Automobile Museum (Musée Jean Tua de l'automobile) , which had 150 cars and motorcycles on display there by 2005.
