The bear hunting is the hunting of bears , on the European brown bear .

history

Humans have hunted bears since prehistoric times. Different techniques or types of hunting were used. The bear counted as a big game for High hunting , and so in the Middle Ages and early modern times, the bear hunting was a privilege of the nobility . Today the bear is no longer part of the game in most European countries.

Types of hunting

The hunt took place as a bear hunt with dogs, which tracked down, chased and caught the bear ( bear dogs , bull biters). The forerunners of today's bracken, the wild floor dogs , played an important role . The bear was almost always killed by several hunters armed with bear skewers - a dangerous situation for the hunters. There were also very cruel methods, for example hunting with an ax in Illyria is described. In this cruel hunting method, the hunter, usually a farmer, provokes the bear, so that the bear climbs up on a tree after him. Then the bear hunter chops off one of the bear's paws, whereupon the bear falls from the tree and is easier to kill.

Later, the hunt was made easier by trapping pits and strong trapping irons for bears, and then the severely restricted bears were killed with spears. With the introduction of ever more powerful firearms hunting became obsolete with the spear and hunting bears often used to hunt or for stand hunting at the bitch or the feeding place . In Russia, the bear is also sought out in winter camp and stimulated until it gets up and is then killed.

Bear hunting law

In some German judicial districts, bear and wolf hunting law is reported from the 16th century. This involves dividing the killed bear among the hunters involved and other beneficiaries of the prey. The venison was considered very tasty and in great demand, bear paws were a special delicacy.
