A stage effect is an optical effect on the stage , usually paired with an acoustic effect .

It serves to set particularly impressive accents and to evoke moods in the course of the stage events by often surprising optical stimuli , not only in music theater almost always reinforced by special acoustic stimuli .

Stage effects are created through the use of lighting technology , sound technology , pyrotechnics and stage technology .

Frequently used stage effects are the simulation of thunderstorms , fire , water and snow and the supposedly free flying of people or props .
