The Weimar Citizens' School on the northwest corner of Goetheplatz and with the entrance on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße was the first urban elementary school building in the city of Weimar and was built primarily on the initiative of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . At that time it was the most modern school in Weimar and made a decisive contribution to improving the elementary school system. Today the municipal music school " Johann Nepomuk Hummel " is housed here.

The solemn laying of the foundation stone of the Weimar Citizens' School took place on November 17, 1822 by Duke Carl August and with speeches by theology doctor Johann Friedrich Röhr and the then senior building director Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray . The latter had designed the yellow-colored, three-winged building in the classical style. Goethe took great interest in the construction of the Weimar Citizens' School and advised Coudray on the planning of the building. The citizen school should serve as an example for other newly established institutions of this kind, both in terms of its external appearance and internal arrangement.

On the 50th anniversary of Carl August's reign in 1825, when all buildings were decorated with garlands, the civic school was finally opened after a three-year construction period. Up until then, the school system in Weimar had suffered from a lack of space. How happy Goethe was that this building was now open to the public is shown by his letter to Duke Carl August of July 20, 1826, in which he writes:

The building itself creates culture when you look at it from the outside and step inside. The rudest children, who go up and down such stairs, go through such anteroom, receive instruction in such cheerful halls, are immediately removed from all gloomy stupidity and they can go unhindered towards a cheerful activity . "

In the U-shaped facility, 600 children were taught in friendly classrooms and strictly separated according to sex. Classes took place in the side wings. On the left was the entrance for the boys, on the right that for the girls. And in the middle part was the large auditorium .

The citizen school fountain

In the year 1858 a late classical cast iron pump well with the gilded figure of a reading boy (boy with gospel ) was set up on the square in front of the community school . The so-called “Citizens School Fountain” was created according to the design of the building inspector Carl Georg Kirchner and was cast by the Erfurt company Hagans . After the fountain was damaged and restored in 1987, the original cast zinc figure was replaced by a gold-plated cast in aluminum alloy . The pump well is still functional today and gets its water from the raven springs.

Music school "Ottmar Gerster"

The music school was founded in 1966, was named " Ottmar Gerster " and since then has guaranteed qualified musical education for children, young people and adults in the city of Weimar and the district. A wide variety of musical instruments, singing, theory, rhythm and dance can be learned here using modern teaching methods. In addition to individual support in challenging individual or group lessons, ensemble courses are also offered. Public appearances by orchestras, big bands and ensembles of various compositions enrich the training. In-depth training is possible after 4 years.

The 214 m² large auditorium with side galleries was completely restored in 1998 and can now be rented under the name "Coudraysaal" for concerts, receptions, congresses, seminars and lectures or even festive menus.

For the 50th anniversary of the music school on June 11, 2016, the name was changed to " Johann Nepomuk Hummel Music School ".
