History and description

A first citizen's hospital with a chapel is said to have existed as early as 1592.

In his will of January 2, 1660, the owner of Ottenstein , Hans Franz Freiherr von Lamberg, founded a hospital for 12 needy subjects. Construction work began in the same year and was completed in 1666 after his widow's death.

As the center of the hospital, the two-storey high hospital chapel covered with a pyramid roof was built on a square floor plan. There were two arched windows at the top on each side.

A flat-vaulted corridor at ground level led around the chapel, which was covered with a pent roof. From this corridor, two doors each led into the four wing structures, which gave the entire complex a cross-shaped floor plan. Each of these wing structures with gable roofs contained two rooms. Small gardens were laid out in the corners between the wing sections.

When the population of Döllersheim began to be resettled in 1938, the hospital was also left to decay. Since 1981 Döllersheim is no longer in the restricted military area and can be visited.

Hospital chapel

The altar of the hospital chapel dates from 1665. On it were two statues of Saints Peter and Paul as well as an altarpiece by Tobias Pock from Vienna .

In the course of the Josephine reforms in 1786, the chapel was desecrated. When the hospital was rebuilt after a fire in 1804, it was rebuilt in its old form and the rooms intended for the chapel were converted into living rooms.
