Bürklin's mausoleum
The Bürklin mausoleum is a burial site in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe and rises in the northeastern part of the area. This octagonal planned building is the former grave site of the family of the politician Albert Bürklin .
architecture
The mausoleum was built from 1911 to 1913 according to plans by the Karlsruhe architect Josef Durm . It was built from the building materials granite, sandstone and marble. The inner dome was covered with gold leaf. In the rear part of the building a staircase leads to the crypt. The statue in the interior of the mausoleum was created by Johannes Hoffart . The entrance to the mausoleum is guarded by two sphinxes made by the sculptor Heinrich Bauser .
Todays use
In the 1960s, the Bürklin family moved their residence and grave to Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse in the Palatinate and transferred the now empty mausoleum to the city of Karlsruhe. The mausoleum stood empty until 1982 before it was extensively renovated. The building was finally prepared as a columbarium and opened to a wider public for urn burials in 1985. The building has been a cultural monument since then and is a listed building .
