history

Boule balls by Bernd Uiberall in front of the entrance

A competition was held in 1972 for the new building of the state central bank in Bremen. When the building was to be completed in the late 1970s, it had to be adapted to the changed conditions. In a central, urban location, a three to five-storey office building was built for the bank from 1980 to 1983 according to plans by the architects Hans-Joachim Pysall, Peter Stahrenberg and Partners (Braunschweig) in the direct vicinity of the former American Consulate Generalfrom 1954. Architecturally, the modern, clearly structured building with a facade made of light sandstone and glass contrasts with the neighboring houses in the street from around 1960/70 and 1900. The entrance is via a forecourt from Kohlhökerstraße. This square was designed by Charly Schreckenberg (Bremen). The oversized granite boules with sandstone tracks were made by the sculptor Bernd Uiberall in 1983.

The architecture guide bremen writes: "The modification [of the new design] is an excellent success ... The light sandstone cladding also adapts to the street scene, as do the bay windows that structure the facade, which roughly correspond to the plot structure of the surrounding Bremen houses ."

The state central bank and the building were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbank as the Bremen branch in 2002. One of the tenants was the Court of Auditors of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . The branch was closed at the end of September 30, 2015. An interim use is made by the Bremen police, who are carrying out exercises there.

Demolition and new construction

The building is slated to be demolished in 2019 or 2020. The real estate developer Evoreal plans to build around 150 to 200 apartments with up to 14 floors there by 2023.
