The vehicles of the BDŽ series 05 04-07 (later series 82 01-04 ) were four-axle diesel-mechanical railcars for the narrow-gauge railways of the Bulgarian state railway Balgarski Darschawni Schelesnizi (BDŽ) designed with Bosnian gauge .

history

The three four-axle narrow-gauge railcars BDŽ series 05 01–03 acquired in 1941 had proven themselves very well in operation on the Rhodope Railway . In order to cope with the increased traffic after the Second World War , the BDŽ again procured four diesel multiple units from Ganz & Co. in Budapest in 1952 . They were similar in structure and appearance to the vehicles from 1941, but with a more powerful 320 hp engine. Originally they received the same series designation 05 with the serial numbers 04-07 , from 1965 the four new vehicles received the new series designation 82 . Six sidecars with the same appearance were procured with the railcars, followed by two more in 1961.

Originally, the railcars, like the three pre-war railcars, were used in Septemwri . Among other things, they handled all traffic between Varvara and Pazardzhik with six daily commutes . Their use on the Rhodope Railway lasted until 1966, when the new Series 75 took over all traffic on the route. All railcars were relocated to Červen Brjag , where they took over a large part of the passenger train service. They could not completely replace the steam locomotives. The service on the narrow-gauge railway to Orjachowo lasted until 1977, when the new 76 series took over traffic.

Some car bodies have been preserved as storage space after being decommissioned. In Orjachowo behind the station building and in Červen Brjag two railcar bodies and one sidecar body are said to have been preserved. The railcar 82-01 was erected in Bansko as a memorial .

technical features

The vehicles were designed to be large for narrow-gauge conditions, considerably larger than the well-known DR 137 322 to 325 narrow-gauge railcars , which towered over them by a length of 3 m. But they had about the same number of seats as this series mentioned.

In the steel frame car body, the wooden slatted seats were placed on one side and the machinery on the other. Where the diesel engine was located, there was a baggage and cargo compartment. The cargo compartment was closed with a folding door, the entrances for the passengers were via the end doors of the railcar. The entry rooms were the workplaces for the train driver, on the unneeded side the control elements could be closed by roller blinds. The sidecars were designed in a similar way, with no load compartments or central doors. But they had a significantly higher capacity with 62 seats.

The engine made 320 hp and the power transmission was mechanical. The engine delivered its torque to the mechanical four-speed gearbox located exactly in the middle of the car, from which both bogie wheels were driven via cardan shafts. This arrangement gave the railcars a high frictional weight. When they were delivered, the vehicles were painted silver-gray. Later some vehicles were painted blue in the lower half and white in the upper half. The museum railcar in Bansko still has the silver-gray paint, but the color has clearly suffered.
