BGN / PCGN transcription
A BGN / PCGN transcription (English BGN / PCGN romanization ), mostly abbreviated as BGN / PCGN or just BGN , is a transcription or transcription convention for one language using a non-Latin writing system into the Latin script , which together recognized and administered by the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use (PCGN).
These conventions are provided by the geographic designation organizations mentioned . In English-speaking countries, they are also used for personal names (alongside other systems such as ALA-LC ).
An overview of details of these jointly managed systems can be found in the publication Romanization Systems and Policies of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency , published in 2012 , which replaces the publication Romanization Systems and Roman-Script Spelling Conventions of the BGN , published in 1994 .
Transcription systems and spelling conventions for individual languages have been and are gradually being made available over the years. The current list can be found on the website of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.
