The KHD A2L 514 R is a two-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for light shunting service. 26 copies of it were built by KHD from 1952 to 1958 and used in various industrial companies. The locomotive is the smallest locomotive built by KHD after the Second World War . The locomotive of the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn No. 224 is known, other locomotives are still available today (2020).
development
The engine is a further development of the pre-war construction Deutz 117 OME R . The two-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine KHD A2L 514 R with air cooling was new . Otherwise, the technology of the locomotive was adopted from the pre-war version.
The locomotives were primarily supplied to small to medium-sized companies in Germany, four locomotives went to Italy , three locomotives to the Netherlands , one locomotive to France and one locomotive to Luxembourg in the ARBED works .
technology
The locomotive has a front end for the machinery and a driver's cab behind it.
The air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine is housed in the front end. The mechanical manual gearbox with four gears sits above the rear axle of the locomotive and drives it directly. The front axle is driven by means of a coupling rod. As a braking option, it originally only had a handbrake.
The locomotive No. 224 of the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn is also equipped with a Knorr type indirect brake . The locomotive could move trailer loads of up to 360 t in 1st gear up to 2.5 km / h. This locomotive was also equipped with a hand-held sand spreader , a horn that was powered by the engine exhaust and an additional electric horn. In other locomotives, the devices for the indirect brake were not available.
commitment
The locomotive on the Buxtehude-Harsefelder Eisenbahn is mentioned here as representative of the locomotive's history. It is one of four locomotives delivered to the Deutsche Bergwerks- und Hüttenbaugesellschaft in Salzgitter . It went to Salzgitter Verkehrsbetriebe in 1959 and was given the designation V 16 there .
In 1975 the locomotive came to the BHE and was subjected to a thorough overhaul in Harsefeld. Then she was used in the shunting service in Buxtehude Süd station. The pulling power of the locomotive was proven by photos in front of long groups of cars.
The locomotive was handed over to the Friends of the Buxtehude-Harsefeld Railway after 2000, which ensures its preservation. Other preserved locomotives can be found in the South German Railway Museum in Heilbronn in Italy and as memorials at various locations.
