BIROS (short for ' Bi-spectral InfraRed Optical System ', formerly also 'Berlin InfraRed Optical System ' ) is an earth observation satellite of the German Aerospace Center , which is supposed to detect fires on earth (and so for example forest fires [early]) .

more details

The satellite was launched into sun-synchronous orbit on June 22, 2016 at 5:56 ( CEST ) with a PSLV launcher from the Satish Dhawan Space Center rocket launch site (together with Cartosat 2C and 18 other satellites) .

It completed the FireBIRD duo, but is not a simple copy of its four years older predecessor TET-1 , but a further developed variant. The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with an infrared system consisting of three camera modules for the quantitative analysis of high-temperature events and is intended to detect forest fires and similar events. The camera system consists of three independent line cameras , one of which in the visible and (near) infrared (range English , Visible Near Infrared ' , shortly VNIR 0.5 microns, 0.6 microns, 0.8 microns) with a resolution of about 50 m and a swath width of 210 km and two infrared cameras in the medium (3.4 to 4.2 µm) and long-wave infrared (8.5 to 9.3 µm) with a resolution of less than 200 m and a swath width of around 180 km. The satellite has a planned lifespan of more than 2.5 years. In addition to the actual remote sensing of fire, the satellite is also used to test technology for small satellite technology. In addition to a new cold gas drive , a laser communication system and high-torque wheels, it also has additional experiments on board. For example the BEESAT-4 built at the TU Berlin , a pico satellite that is separated by BIROS and communicates with it in formation flight via an InterSatellite link and AVANTI, an experiment for researching formation flights.
