BP Pedestrian Bridge

The BP Pedestrian Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in Chicago's Loop district. It crosses Columbus Drive and connects the Daley Bicentennial Plaza with Millennium Park , both of which are in turn part of the larger Grant Park . The bridge was designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize- winning architect Frank Gehry , who had already designed the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. It opened on July 16, 2004 along with the rest of Millennium Park.

Entrance to the BP Pedestrian Bridge in Daley Bicentennial Plaza

The oil company BP after the bridge is named, donated 5 million USD for the construction of the bridge. It is the first bridge built designed by Gehry. The bridge has a serpentine, curved shape. The bridge was designed to carry heavy loads without causing structural problems due to its own weight. The bridge is known for its aesthetic shape, and Gehry's style can be seen in the biomorphic allusions and extensive sculptural use of stainless steel plates for abstraction. The pedestrian bridge serves as a noise protection against the traffic noise of Columbus Drive. It is a link between Millennium Park and attractions to the east, such as the nearby Lake Front , other parts of Grant Park and a parking garage . The BP-Pedestrian Bridge uses a concealed box girder design with a concrete base, the floor of which is covered with hardwood planks. It is designed without a handrail and instead has a stainless steel parapet. The total length is 285 meters, with a five percent gradient, which makes it barrier-free and accessible. Although the bridge structure is closed in winter because ice cannot be safely removed from its wooden floor, it has received good reviews for its design and aesthetics.
