BR-Spielwaren is a chain of toy shops from Denmark . The German subsidiary BR-Spielwaren GmbH is based in Hamburg and operates 21 branches. On December 7, 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy at the Hamburg District Court. On November 30, 2018, the parent company TOP-TOY A / S initiated judicial restructuring proceedings in Denmark and announced a withdrawal from northern Germany.
history
Edith and Børge Rasmussen bought a kiosk in Roskilde in 1950 , which mainly sold stationery. The two sons of the married couple Henrik and Bjarne Gjørup joined the company in 1963 and converted it into a specialist toy store. The second BR shop opened in Slagelse in the same year . The name of the company comes from the initials of the father: B ørge R asmussen.
The chain is now represented with 247 stores in Denmark , Sweden , Norway , Finland and Northern Germany .
TOP-TOY A / S
In November 1990 Gjørups founded the TOP-TOY A / S group. BR was incorporated as a subsidiary. In the mid-1990s, long-term franchising agreements were signed with the American toy chain group Toys'R'Us , which secured TOP-TOY the monopoly for Toys'R'Us stores in the Nordic region. The group employs over 3000 people and has an annual turnover of 500 million euros.
