The Bacherpark on Bacherplatz

The Bacherpark is an approximately 6,000 m² urban park in the 5th  Viennese district of Margareten . It takes its name from the Bacherplatz in which it is located. The park and square are named after the “bourgeois ornamental and pleasure gardener” Leopold Bacher (1793–1869); for four decades he was a poor councilor or poor district director in Margareten.

The park is used as a recreation area, but above all as a playground for the children and young people of the nearby school. In 2013 a Salzburg company built numerous play and climbing equipment, including a tree house, numerous climbing passages, rocking bridges and a "knight's castle". There are also ball sports facilities in the park. From the end of April to the beginning of October, the park attendants are guests in the Bacherpark.

There is a dog zone in the Bacherpark. This was renovated at the end of 2013, whereby the surface was designed with lava granules and large decorative stones.

In February 2002, district chairman Kurt Wimmer (SPÖ) planned, with the approval of the ÖVP and FPÖ, to build a three-storey “Volksgarage” under Bacherplatz. In 2004 a citizens' initiative was formed to combat this project and in a short time collected 1,873 protest signatures. Nevertheless, it was decided to change the land use plan. As a result, there were numerous protests. In January 2006 the park was occupied by activists who set up a tent camp, whereupon the ÖVP and FPÖ now distanced themselves from the garage project. Finally, a survey of residents showed a majority of 65.9% against the project, which was then discontinued by the district chief.

The new Reinprechtsdorfer Straße underground station is to be built in the immediate vicinity between 2018 and 2023 .
