David John Ibbetson
David Ibbetson is a British lawyer and professor , Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Cambridge and President of Clare Hall (former name of Clare College ). From 2009 to 2012 he was chairman of the student council for law in Cambridge .
Life
David Ibbetson grew up in Manchester and studied from 1973 at Corpus Christi College, where he obtained both his Master of Law (MA) and doctoral degrees. In 1980 he became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford . In 2000 he returned to Cambridge with the appointment as Regius Professor of Civil Law at Corpus Christi College. In 2003 he was elected to the British Academy . In 2004 he became director of Leckhampton, a graduate student residence at Clare College. Ibbetson left Corpus Christi in August 2013 to succeed Martin Harris as eighth President of Clare College, Cambridge.
Ibbetson is a professor of Roman law . His research also covers the legal history of England and Wales and European legal history . And although he has published in other areas, his main work is about English and European legal history, particularly the relationship between common law and the legal systems and approaches in the rest of Europe.
