Regius Professor of Civil Law (Cambridge)

Regius Chair of Civil Law is the name of a Regius Professorship for Civil Law (as opposed to Common Law ) at the University of Cambridge . The professorship was donated by Henry VIII in 1540 with an original salary of £ 40 per year. At the same time, a professorship of the same name was founded at the University of Oxford , the Regius Professor of Civil Law (Oxford) . The professor is appointed by The Crown and remains in office durante bene placito (at will) of the monarch. It is one of the oldest professorships at the university.
