Bachtrioni

Bachtrioni ( Georgian ბახტრიონი ; bɑχtʼrɪɔnɪ ) is a former fortress in the historical province of Kakheti in Georgia , today in the municipality of Akhmeta . The ruins of the fortress located on the left high bank of the river Alazani opposite the mouth of the Ilto and near the city Akhmeta .
history
The fortress was built in the 1650s on the orders of the Persian Shah Abbas II . The fortress Bachtrioni derives its name from a nearby village, the name of the important Georgian noble family Bakhtarashvili also refers to this Bachtrioni.
In 1659 an uprising against the Kizilbaschen took place in Kakheti , in that year the Georgians won the important battle of Bachtrioni . During the battle, the fortress was almost completely destroyed and then remained in ruins.
Building description
The fortress Bachtrioni has a triangular plan and had several towers that are still in ruins. There are still two floors of the western tower, the lower floor had a door on the northern wall, some wall niches to the east and a fireplace in the middle . Ruins of other buildings have been uncovered in the area of the fortress. In the eastern part there is still a small stone church without an apse , its entrance door is on the southern wall and window openings still remain in the eastern and western walls. This church is the oldest part of the building and dates from the late Middle Ages . The complex, which is important as a historical and cultural monument, is located under forest and undergrowth, there is no tourist attention.
