history

At the beginning of the 1970s, the bakery trade primarily obtained information from specialist journals from the regional associations. The first publisher of the Back Journal, Hans-Dobler, had in mind to create an independent, nationwide trade journal for the entire baking industry. The first Back Journal appeared in 1973. In 1983 Wilhelm Schlame took over the magazine. It has been in the hands of the publisher Trond Patzphal since 2002.

Marktkieker

The Marktkieker is a marketing and innovation award for the baking industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It honors entrepreneurial achievements in the industry. The award was launched in 1987 by Back Journal and entrepreneur Fridjof Olms.

Today the sole donor of the award is the Back Journal. Prize winners are only companies that produce bread and baked goods and distribute them themselves. The size of the company does not play a role in the award. Nominations are based on speculative applications and suggestions from an independent jury of experts. Two jurors each visit the nominated ten to twelve companies over two days. In a secret election by the jury, three or four Marktkieker prizewinners are usually chosen.

The award will then take place at a festive gala in Berlin, usually in the Hotel Adlon . Here the winners receive the Marktkieker sculpture. It is a 25 centimeter bronze figure depicting a baker with a bread pusher who symbolically takes a step forward. It was designed by the Berlin artist Sati Zech. The name Marktkieker goes back on the one hand to the location of the first award ceremony and on the other hand embodies the idea of market observation: It bears the name of the restaurant of the first gala, which took place in Großburgwedel near Hanover . In addition, the North German word kieken means to look for something or (curiously) to look out.
