Backhaus (Irresheim)

The bakehouse on the moth

The bakery is in Irresheim , a district of the Nörvenich community in Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Next to the Halfenhof stands “et Backes”, a bakery that Henricus Rey built in 1789, as indicated by the notch “1789 HR” on the beam above the left door on the eaves side of the house facing Annastraße.

The half-timbered house stands on the foundations of a former defense tower . The impressive remnant of this ancient defense system is the up to one meter thick wall made of field stones and hewn stone blocks, which forms the back of the building and is probably the oldest man-made structure in the village. This masonry also comes to light as the foundation of the two gables, in the basement and on the inner partition.

The facility stands on a hand-thrown hill that was originally completely surrounded by water. The trench, which is now dry, is 19 m wide in places; it was only filled in after the Second World War .

It is a moth hill , as such systems are called by archaeologists, it is an early medieval residential and defense system . On the raised island, protected by the moat , stood a heavy tower , the massive construction and size of which can easily be imagined from the remains of the wall. It served the residents of the farm as a refuge in case of danger, from which they could also repel smaller attacks. This tower could have been built as early as the 13th century, a time when the landed aristocrats built fortified courtyards in this way, which had previously often been made of solid wood. The well-fortified tower has certainly given the Halfenhof the name "Castle", which was customary in the past; At the beginning of our century, an unmarried member of the Rey family was called "de Burgfräulein". In the Steinfeld camp books from the years 1502/03, there is also talk of “der burch van Erreshem” (castle of Irresheim) several times.

The tower, the name Burg and the fact that today's Halfenhof , which is part of the property, was formerly owned by the nobility, allow the cautious conclusion that the original cell of the village from which Irresheim developed could be located here. When Henricus Rey built his bakery in 1789, the days of residential and defense towers, which were also known as " Berfes " in the old days , were long gone. The family had found their apartment in a comfortable house, the tower no longer offered protection from enemies for a long time, it was no longer up to modern firearms. Whether it was destroyed or dilapidated at the time can no longer be determined today.

The spacious bakery with the adjoining storage room was certainly a modern facility in its time, in which the housewives of the Halfenhof baked and stored their bread for a period of over 100 years. Et Backes has also lost its job for decades ; it has long served as a poultry house. The bakery is entered in the list of monuments and in the soil monument list of the municipality. The building was entered on March 18, 1985 in the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 40.
