Most of the source code of the Google Chrome web browser is made available under the BSD license as an open source project under the name Chromium . The project started on September 2, 2008.
Chromium is named after the chemical element chromium .
development
Both the Blink rendering engine and the V8 JavaScript implementation are developed in C ++ . There are build instructions and snapshots of Chromium for Windows , macOS and Linux .
Differences from Google Chrome
Components not included in the Chromium project compared to Google Chrome are:
- Trademarks (name and logo)
- RLZ identifier
- Digital rights management
- Automatic update function
- Adobe Flash Player , which has been slowly retiring in Chrome since late 2016
Since March 2019 there are also versions with all codecs : incl. H.264 u. AAC , even H.265 works.
The PDF viewer, which was previously only available in Google Chrome , has also been integrated in Chromium since May 2014.
Copying and modifying the binary version of Chrome is expressly prohibited by Chrome's terms of use.
Spin-offs
There are Chromium-based products and fork-offs that deactivate program parts or add more. These include Comodo Dragon , SRWare Iron , Flock and Brave , among others . The Opera browser has also been using the Opera browser since 2013 and Vivaldi has been using the Blink rendering engine used in Chromium and the V8 JavaScript implementation since 2015 . The Samsung Internet browser pre-installed on Samsung smartphones and tablets also uses Chromium. Some of these spin-offs, like Chromium itself, are open source.
Microsoft Edge has also been using Chromium since January 2020 .
