The pumped storage power plant Bad Creek ( English Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station ) is located in Oconee County of the US state of South Carolina and is the most powerful hydroelectric power plant of Duke Energy . The four machine sets of the power plant, which went into operation in 1991, have a combined output of 1,065 megawatts . The upper basin is the Bad Creek Reservoir , which dams the two rivers Bad Creek and West Bad Creek . Lake Jocassee serves as the lower basin .
In 2018, the approval to increase the output of the system, which has been in existence for 25 years, was granted. From 2019 to 2023, all four turbines are to be replaced for 200 million US dollars , so that the output increases to 1,400 MW.
