The bathing island is an artificial island on the south bank of the Steinhuder Meer near Steinhude , which was created in 1975.

location and size

The island is located on the south bank of the lake near Steinhude . It is around 3.5  hectares and thus around three times the size of the lake island and fortress Wilhelmstein in the Steinhuder Meer . The maximum north-south extension of the bathing island is 220 meters, from east to west it measures 330 meters. The bathing island was created in 1975 by washing up sand from the Steinhuder Meer. This led to a deepening of the lake near the island to about 1.5 m. Previously, the water in this area was only knee-deep and covered with reed beds.

The island can be reached via an 80 meter long pedestrian bridge. Access is free, but only allowed during the day. Towards the end of the day, the bridge is blocked by a gate.

Island facilities

Solar energy and biomass are used exclusively for the self-sufficient energy supply on the island . The futuristic service center is used to generate passive solar energy. It was built in place of a kiosk building as part of the EXPO 2000 project and has been awarded an architecture prize. In the south of the island, directly on the Inselweg, there is a children's playground.

In the service center there is a kiosk, a café and a bistro-beer garden and a freely accessible viewing platform that offers a view of the lake from a height of around 15 meters. A restaurant (on the culinary level of a snack bar) is operated here. Sanitary facilities on the island are toilets and beach showers. In the northeast of the island there is a 100 meter wide sandy beach with an area of around 5000 m². The shore here forms a small bay. The rest of the island consists mostly of lawns and bushes, but groups of trees and small groves that run through the entire island give the island a park-like appearance. Although the trees are no more than 40 years old, they are sometimes impressive in height. There are large stocks of reeds on the west bank of the island.

A circular hiking trail serves as a connection between the island and the promenade in Steinhude. In between there is a quarter with weekend houses, which forbids direct access to the shore with corresponding prohibition signs.
