The Badersee is a small mountain lake in the municipality of Grainau near Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

The lake got its name from its former owners, the Bader family from Grainau.

The lake is 12,810 square meters, 177 meters long, 131 meters wide and has a circumference of 580 meters. The mean water depth in the western part of the lake is 2–3 meters, in the eastern part 5–6 meters. The maximum depth is 18 meters, this is in the depression between the island and the south bank. The emerald-green, clear lake is always ice-free because it is fed underground by groundwater sources. It has no inflow and outflow above ground.

In the lake, west of the island, there is a life-size sculpture of a mermaid on a boulder at a depth of around 5 meters. The art object was installed there in the middle of the 19th century and can be easily viewed from a boat. The sculpture contributed significantly to the fame of the lake. She is said to have the features of Lola Montez , the legendary dancer and lover of King Ludwig I of Bavaria .

Emergence

Similar to the Eibsee , the lake was created when part of the Zugspitze massif came loose and caused a crater that then filled with groundwater. The morphology of the lake and its surroundings is therefore also dominated by rockslide blocks. The largest block forms a small, overgrown island in the eastern part of the lake.

Leisure and surroundings

In 1871 the Bavarian charity councilor Glonn bought the lake and built a hotel on its bank that still exists today. The lake, which is privately owned by the previous hotel owners, can be accessed by boat. From here you have a view of the Zugspitze and the Waxenstein . The Academy of Bavarian Cooperatives is attached to the hotel. The owner is the Genossenschaftsverband Bayern e. V. in Munich.
