The Waxenstein is a mountain group in the northwestern Wetterstein Mountains .
location
The mountain range rises immediately south of the holiday resort Grainau , near Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
The Kleine Waxenstein forms the end of the Waxenstein ridge with the northeast face of the Manndl, which slopes steeply towards Hammersbach. The Große Waxenstein, the highest peak of the Waxensteinkamm, lies to the west of it. The striking rock summit in between is the Zwölferkopf. The Mittagsscharte is the noticeable incision between the Kleiner Waxenstein and the Zwölferkopf.
To the northwest of the mountains lies the Eibsee (about 970 m above sea level ), the largest mountain lake in the region. At the foot of the steeply sloping slopes , the famous Höllental extends southwards .
Immediately at the end of this approximately five kilometer long valley , the Zugspitze , Germany's highest mountain, rises up. This forms the border with the Austrian Tyrol .
