The Alpspitze is a 2628  m high mountain in the Wetterstein Mountains . The pyramid-shaped summit is a landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and one of the most famous and beautiful mountain figures in the Northern Limestone Alps . It consists mainly of Wetterstein limestone from the Upper Triassic .

Climbs

Several via ferratas lead to the Alpspitze . The shortest ascent is from the Osterfelderkopf mountain station ( 2033  m ) of the Alpspitzbahn cable car from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From the Osterfelderkopf , the Alpspitze can either be climbed directly via the "Alpspitz-Ferrata", an easy, largely secured and well-traveled via ferrata (approx. 2 hours from the Osterfelderkopf) or you can reach the summit via the Nordwandsteig, which curves east into the Oberkar and from there on the left edge of the Kars leads to the summit.

Another possibility of ascent or descent is from the Grießkarscharte ( 2460  m ), which can be reached either from the Höllentalangerhütte in Höllental via the Mathaisenkar (via ferrata) or from the Stuibensee via the Grießkar.

The often used lead from the Alpspitze over the Jubiläumsgrat to the Zugspitze is a difficult and long climbing tour, with places in the third level of difficulty on the UIAA scale to be mastered.

Summit cross

The summit cross was erected in 1946 by Richard Weber and Kaspar Jocher together with the Garmisch Kolping family . A memorial plaque was attached to the cross on the 25th and 50th anniversary of the installation.
