The Badische Beekeeping School Heidelberg is one of two beekeeping schools of the Baden Beekeepers Association . The second beekeeping school operated by the regional association is located in the southern part of the association area in Oberentersbach .

At the Badische Beekeeping School in Heidelberg, beekeepers, both members and non-members, receive practical and theoretical training. One focus is on multiplier training, i.e. the training of trainers in the clubs. The apprenticeship as a beekeeper (journeyman) under the name of animal husband , specializing in beekeeping , is carried out by state-approved training companies and not by the Heidelberg beekeeping school .

Bee colonies modified in Dadant and zander magazine hives are available for practical courses . From May to June, Carnica and Buckfast cultivars are issued weekly. There are around 20–30 events per year, with up to 800 participants per year. The current training program is published on the website of the Baden Beekeepers 'Association and in the beekeepers' journal Bienen & Natur.

history

On the initiative of the Baden regional association chairman Otto Falk from Weinheim, the beekeeping school was opened in Heidelberg on May 22nd, 1927 , 30 years after the closure of the first state beekeeping school in Eberbach . This was created on Steigerweg in Heidelberg on a terrace plot provided by the " Portheim Foundation for Art and Science ". The school building consisted of a teaching room and extensions for 60 bee colonies . The facility quickly became a center for beekeeping education and training for beekeepers in North Baden, where students from neighboring universities were also regularly introduced to beekeeping and beekeeping. On March 20, 1944, an aerial bomb destroyed the school building.

With the help of the city of Heidelberg, a Wehrmacht barrack was made available in 1946 on the grounds of the Kurpfälzischer Tiergarten , in which school operations could be resumed. In 1947 two extension wings were necessary for the bee colonies. This project was financed through shares in the north Baden beekeepers.

Within the first 50 years, more than 3200 course participants had taken part in training courses. At that time, journeyman and beekeeper exams were also held . The number of bee colonies kept was 40, a mating station was also attached and a walking stand was maintained in the Holzbachtal.

In the mid-1950s, the city of Heidelberg planned a youth hostel on the site , which made it necessary to relocate the beekeeping school.

On May 4, 1957, the school building was inaugurated at its current location in the Pfaffengrund district . The cost of construction was supported by the city of Heidelberg. After an extension in 1982, the building has a teaching room, library, kitchen, centrifugal room and an apiary in the garden area. The last modernization took place in 1992.
