technology

history

The 287 excavator was built in 1976. It was first used in the Fortuna opencast mine , and in 1987 it moved to Hambach.

After 33 years, the paddle wheel had to be completely renewed from July 20, 2009 in three months of work. The component with a mass of 55 tons was prefabricated in the technology center of RWE Power in Grefrath and assembled on site. At the same time, the main ball bearing measuring 21 meters , on which the excavator's superstructure rotates, was replaced. This consists of 272 spheres, each with a diameter of 32 centimeters and a mass of 132 kilograms.

The planning for the 10 million euro work took three years. On the occasion of this work, RWE created a film documentation that received the film prize World Media Festival Award intermedia-globe-Silver .
